The finish lies 2 kilometres after the Alto La Unión, which is the biggest hurdle of the day. The 7.5 kilometres climb leads to an altitude of 2,535 metres, while the average gradient is 5.2%. After the passage over the summit the riders fly down a descent to the finish line in La Unión.
Although the route of stage 5 takes in four local rounds, the last climb is featured only once. The riders tackle the ascent at the end of the last full lap.
The rest of the route features a lot of false flat. Each round includes a second KOM, namely Alto Nano, which also featured in stage 3. This time the climb is tackled from another side, thus amounting to 2.9 kilometres while its average gradient sits at 5.6%.
The first three riders on the line win time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each.
