Volta a Catalunya 2021 Route stage 2: ITT in Banyoles
Tuesday 23 March - The Volta a Catalunya features an individual time trial for the first time in years. The 2nd stage is a 18.5 kilometres race against the clock with start and finish in Banyoles.
Banyoles hosted a 41.3 kilometres team time trial on the 2017 Volta a Catalunya. Movistar finished 2 seconds ahead of BMC, but the Spanish armada was penalised for pushing and ended up in third position. Other finishes in the industrial centre just north of Girona were won by sprinters – Gianni Meersman (2013), Mark Cavendish (2010) and Thor Hushovd (2008).
The 18.5 kilometres ITT is the first medium length individual chrono test at the Volta a Catalunya since 2007 (Dennis Menchov victory). The 2010 edition included a 3.6 kilometre prologue in Lloret de Mar, which was won by Paul Voß.
The first part of the route features the most vertical metres. Taking in a short climb to start the route continues onto a false flat after 3.5 kilometres. The last three quarters of the route are virtually flat.
