For the fourth consecutive edition the Vuelta a Burgos serves a race to Picón Blanco. Mikel Landa triumphed in 2017, while the race came down to a two-up sprint in 2018 with Miguel Ángel López besting his compatriot Iván Sosa. The latter bounced back last year with a solo victory.
Stage 3 takes in four intermediate climbs. The first half of the race takes the riders across the Alto de la Mota (4.5 kilometres at 6%), Alto Escaléron (3.6 kilometres at 6%) and Alto de Ailanes (2.8 kilometres at 7.5%) before the route continues on rolling terrain to the Alto de Retuerta. This 3.8 kilometres climb at 7.5% is crested with roughly 25 kilometres remaining.
The final haul up on the Picón Blanco begins in Espinosa de los Monteros, at an elevation of 762 metres, and travels to an abandoned military base at 1,512 metres. The road is small and the paving is, at times, in a bad shape. The average gradient of 9.3% is biased as the 7.8 kilometres ascent climbs for kilometres at more than 10%. The steepest ramp – 15% – appears just before the finish line.
