Race report
Gediminas Bagdonas is the first attacker. Pete Williams and Sam Jenner join him and it turns out to be the right move. The breakaway’s lead never exceeds 3 minutes though with Jumbo-Visma doing most of the work in the peloton.
Mathieu van der Poel and Frederik Frison attack at Scott’s View to rejoin the leaders. The peloton gets back to them before Pavel Sivakov strikes on the climb to Dingleton. While race leader Dylan Groenewegen struggles in the peloton, the Ineos youngster reaches the village 15 second before the peloton.
After Sivakov has been brought back the first group continues to set a relentless pace to prevent Groenewegen from returning to the main group. Cavendish is in the same group as the Dutchman.
Alex Downsett attacks in the last kilometres before he is brought back inside the last 100 metres. Matteo Trentin outguns Jasper De Buyst and Mike Teunissen to move into the race lead, as the Italian pockets a time bonus for the second day in a row.
