Race report
Matt Holmes, Gabriel Cullaigh and Emil Vinjebo are the breakaway three and they race to a lead of 3 minutes before the peloton takes control.

Echelons split the peloton with 85 kilometres remaining. Leader Mathieu van der Poel and three time stage winner Dylan Groenewegen misses the move, although the leader’s jersey makes the front group along with a few of his teammates.

The increased pace causes Holmes, Cullaigh and Vinjebo to get caught by the first group of approximately 30 riders. They reach the picturesque Ramsbottom Rake climb 45 seconds ahead of the second group, but 40 riders regroup as the race approaches Blackburn.

Andrey Amador goes solo and he puts 45 seconds into the reduced peloton – around 40 riders – before he is brought back with 38 kilometres remaining.

Following a phase with continued attacks Michal Golas, Larry Warbasse and Mark Christian jump clear. But the GC bunch is regrouped into the final 10 kilometres.

The race comes down to a close finish on Deansgate with Mathieu van der Poel besting Cees Bol and Matteo Trentin. The Dutchman wins the GG ahead of the Italian with Jasper De Buys in third.
