Race report
Rory Townsend and Jonathan McEvoy are the first attackers, but they are brought back. Townsend is determined though and he goes again. Eventually, the 24-year old Irishman gets it his way and he is part of the breakaway with Gediminas Bagdonas, James Fouché, Jake Scott and Dries De Bondt.
The lead of the breakaway five doesn’t exceed 2 minutes. Scott takes maximum points over the intermediate ascents to become the first King of the Mountains in this year’s Tour of Britain, while Bagdonas sits up with 80 kilometres to wait for the peloton.
Fouché, Scott and De Bondt are the last attackers to be reeled in with 6 kilometres remaining before Groenewegen storms to victory on the finishing straight of Kirkcudbright. Obviously, the Dutchman is the first race leader.
