Race report
The route climbs from the start, and attacks are flying. However, there is no breakaway at the summit, although Axel Laurance, Finlay Fickering, Louis Vervaeke, and Maxim Van Gils enjoy a small lead. On the descent, Harold Martín López, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Einer Rubio, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Jan Christen, and Sylvain Moniquet replace Laurance and Vervaeke.
The peloton keeps chasing for a while, but eventually the gap extends to over 2 minutes.
On the first full ascent of the Col de la Croix, the gap narrows to one minute, prompting Staune-Mittet to continue solo. He reaches the summit 40 seconds ahead of the peloton.
The other seven attackers are swallowed up, and then the chase stalls. The 22-year-old Norwegian extends his lead back to 1.30 minutes.
Staune-Mittet’s effort comes to an end in the last 4 kilometres of the finishing climb. Felix Gall, who has just attacked from the GC group, is the first rider to overhaul him. He opens up a 17 seconds lead over the yellow jersey group.
João Almeida, Adam Yates, Wilco Kelderman, and Matthew Riccitello chase behind the Austrian. The first two make the catch with 2 kilometres left and ride on together towards the finish line. Yellow jersey Yates is gifted the win.
