Race report
It takes 23 kilometres for the breakaway to take shape. Then Lilian Calmejane, Jasha Sütterlin, Jhonatan Restrepo, Jonathan Caicedo, Diego Rosa, Einer Rubio, Warren Barguil, Tsgabo Grmay, Chris Hamilton and Quinn Simmons put 6 minutes into the peloton.
Simmons drops all his companions on the first of three Bellante climbs and goes solo. Still 43 kilometres to go.
The American is caught with 12.6 kilometres to go. Valentin Ferron tries his luck and counterattacks. His effort ends at the foot of the finish climb.
The favourites put pressure on one another and Pogacar marks every move with ease until he goes clear himself in the last kilometre. He crosses the line 2 seconds clear of Vingegaard, Lafay and Evenepoel. A second group comes home 5 seconds behind the impeccable Slovene, who is the new GC leader.
