Race report
A breakaway of six takes shape early on. Luca Rastelli, Edoardo Zardini, Davide Bais, Taco van der Hoorn, Mattia Bais and Mirco Maestri carve out a lead of 6 minutes before the peloton takes control.
UAE Emirates brings the attackers with 48 kilometres remaining before Tadej Pogacar gains a time bonus of 3 seconds in the intermediate sprint 20 kilometres later. The Slovene pushes on with Marc Soler and Julian Alaphilippe, while Tao Geoghegan Hart bridges across.
The quartet opens up a gap of 30 seconds, but they are caught 10 kilometres before the line.
The technical finale in Terni leads onto a cobbled home straight. Arnaud Démare opens the sprint with gusto, but Caleb Ewan overhauls the Frenchman to take a commanding victory, whil young Olav Kooij finishes in third.
The positioning on GC remains unchanged, with Ganna in the lead and Evenepoel and Pogacar second and third. Yet, the gap between the latter two is only 3 seconds after Pogacar’s intermediate sprint coup.
