Al Marjan Island is a man-made archipelago located in Ras al-Khaimah, an emirate that saw two sprint finishes in the Dubai Tour, but never in the UAE Tour. Elia Viviani (2018) and Marcel Kittel (2017).
It is hard to foresee another outcome in the Al Marjan Island stage in the UAE Tour. On flat roads the race takes place within Ras al-Khaimah, while visiting its neighbouring emirate Umm Al-Quwain along the way.
In early 1972 Ras al-Khaimah was the last emirate to join the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to UAE standards it’s a fertile place. More rainfall than in the surrounding emirates and underground water streams from the mountains of Oman account for the green areas. Jebel Jais – summit finish of stage 5 – is located in the northern part of the emirate, close to Oman.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints – at kilometre 51.3 and at kilometre 171.7 – come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
