Race report
Attacks are flying from the start, but it takes almost half an hour for the first effort that sticks. Robin Carpenter jumps clear before Simon Geschke, Gian Friesecke and Taco van der Hoorn rejoin him to race to a gap of more than 3 minutes.
Geraint Thomas hits the deck with 30 kilometres remaining and the Tour de France champion abandons the race.
Friesecke heads out alone on a climb inside the last 20 kilometres. The home rider is brought back after a solo of approximately 10 kilometres.
Following a perfect lead-out Elia Viviani opens the sprint. Peter Sagan tries to jump to his wheel but fails. Michel Matthews overhauls the former World Champion, while Viviani storms to the victory he so desperately craved on the Giro.
Sagan stays in the GC lead, although Matthews moves closer and now sits at 10 seconds.

As a fellow amateur road racer, as much as I sympathise at the horrendous injuries Chris Froome sustained, why o why was he so complacent in very windy conditions, by taking his hands off the handlebars, especially riding his time trial bike complete with deep section wheels etc! ( Unbelievable )
