Race report
KOM leader Simon Pellaud, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Remco Evenepoel, Harm Vanhoucke, Alexis Gougeard, Jonas Gregaard, Andrea Pasqualon and Claudio Imhof jump clear at kilometre 4. They race to a lead of 2 minutes, but Jumbo-Visma is always in control. Which makes sense, Martínez is 1.29 down on race leader Roglic.
The lead group tackles the last climb 1.30 minutes ahead of the peloton. Martínez is the toughest rider, yet he is brought back with 5 kilometres remaining.
Hirt and Carthy attack inside the last 2 kilometres, but Roglic goes on the counter-attack. Thomas jumps across before it all comes together. Carthy opens the sprint from far out. Roglic overhauls him to take the win ahead of Costa and Thomas.
The Slovenian carries a 12 seconds lead over Rui Costa into tomorrow’s ITT. Odds are he will retain his overall title and he will be oozing with confidence at the start of the Giro next Saturday.
