It’s been six years since Fano served as a host to a major race. In the 2012 Giro d’Italia Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in the seaside town on the Adriatic coast. He outclassed Matthew Goss and Daniele Bennati, who came in second and third.
The stage is a two-faced race. The route is hilly in the first 100 kilometres before a rolling section and a descent lead to the final stretch on the flat.
The first three riders on the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the two intermediate sprints (at kilometre 59.2 and at kilometre 127.4) come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
