Race report
A big break with Moreno Moser, Niki Terpstra and Steve Cummings races to a gap of 3 minutes, but they are reeled in. Then Mikel Landa, Mattia Cattaneo and Bob Jungels give it a go, while Tim Wellens bridges the gap. They race to a 1 minute lead before they are brought back by Movistar.
Kwiatkowski leaves with 42 kms left. Also to no avail.
Some 10 kms later Felline and Gatto are off with Kwiatkowski, Majka, Van Garderen and Amador bridging over. Also to no avail.
Next attackers in line are Roman Kreuziger, Diego Rosa and Rui Costa before Vasil Kyrienka and Luis Leon Sanchez go on the counter-attack. The duo powers to a lead of half a minute and with 10 kms left the Spaniard heads out on his own. Van Garderen joins him. Also to no avail.
A group with favourites gobble up the leaders. On a false flat intermezzo around ten riders are left at the front, among them Quintana, Thomas, Sagan, Dumoulin, Mollema, Roglic and Pinot. Steep ramps and twisting medieval streets, the finale look like the Strade Bianche. The ensuing sprint is for Sagan ahead of Pinot and Roglic.
