Tirreno-Adriatico 2017: Quintana climbs to victory and leaders jersey on Terminillo

The Queen Stage in the Tirreno-Adriatico takes in two intermediate climbs to finish on the Monte Terminillo after a 16.1 kilometres closing climb at 7.3%. Nairo Quinta goes solo with 2 kilometres remaining to climb to victory ahead of Geraint Thomas. The Colombian is the new overall leader. (Slideshow route/profile)

Race report
Shortly after the start Ballerini, Maestri, Marangoni, Mamykin, Gioux and Kump go on the attack. They race to a lead of 11 minutes. But when hitting the last climb Ballerini is the only leader left, 1 minute ahead of the chasing peloton.

Kwiatkowski accelerates with 13 kms to go and he is accompanied by Lammertink, Kreuziger, Spilak and Castroviejo. They gobble up Ballerini and race to a 30 seconds gap. Kreuziger and Lammertink are dropped.

With 7 kms to go Spilak speeds up and Castroviejo can’t follow the pace, 2 kms later Kwiatkowski is dropped also. On the lower slopes Adam Yates attacks in the peloton and Quintana, Thomas en Uran jump to his wheel. A little later, with around 2 kms left, Quintana closes the gap to Spilak. The Colombian leaves the Slovenian alone to solo to victory.
