Race report
Matteo Fabbro and Pierre Rolland jump off the front in the last 5 kilometres of the Galibier ascent. Rolland cemets his KOm lead at the top, while Andrey Amador, Andres Ardila, Toms Skujins, Dries Devenyns, Simon Guglielmi, Jasper Stuyven, Laurens Huys, Mark Donovan, Kevin Vermaerke, Luis León Sánchez, Gregor Mühlberger, Carlos Verona, Bruno Armirail, Omer Goldstein, Kenny Elissonde and Victor Lafay bridge across on descent.
The lead group arrives almost 3 minutes ahead of the peloton at the base of the Croix de Fer. Mark Donovan goes solo. The Briton opens a 1 minute before his breakaway companions regain contact with 7 kilometres to climb. Moments later Donovan is dropped.
Mühlberger gives it a go in the last 5 climbing kilometres of the Croix de Fer. Rolland, Elissonde, Verona and Lafay track him down. Meanwhile yellow jersey Van Aert loses contact in the GC group.
Rolland cements his KOM lead at the top before Verona strikes on descent. Elissonde flies to his wheel and the two hit the finish climbs 1.40 minutes ahead of the GC group.
Verona heads out alone on the first slopes, while Cattaneo is distanced in the peloton and Guerreiro jumps off the front. Vingegaard brings back the Portugueswith Roglic, O’Connor, Chaves, Meintjes, Johannessen and Gaudu in his wheel.
Roglic strikes with 2 kilometres remaining, but he comes too late for the stage win. Verona wins this first UCI WorldTour stage in his career and Roglic is the new overall race leader.
