Race report
Four riders escape early on. Sebastian Schönberger, Omer Goldstein, Jonas Wilsly and Thomas Champion quickly open up a gap before Goldstein can’t follow the pace and drops back into the peloton.

After roughly an hour KOM leader Pierre Rolland goes after the leaders with his team mates Alexis Gougeard and Miguel Heidemann. They make the catch after 20 kilometres. Gougeard and Heidemann pay for their efforts and are dropped inside the last 60 kilometres. Champions loses contact with 46 kilometres remaining, while the others are caught on the climb to the line.

Overnight race leader Alexis Vuillermoz loses contact with 2.5 kilometres remaining before Jumbo-Visma neutralises a Ben O’Connor attack just before the flamme rouge. Everything works out according to plan for the Dutch squad and Van Aert is heading for the win when he raises his hands in glory. But then… Gaudu slips past him in the last metre to pip him for the win.

Van Aert is not left empty handed, as he moves back into the yellow jersey.
