Vuelta 2020 Favourites stage 13: Roglic rocketing toward GC victory

The ITT of La Vuelta could turn out to be crucial in terms of the overall victory. The La Covatilla stage on the penultimate day of action is the only other opportunity to open up time gaps. (Slideshow route/profile)

The route of the 13th stage is very straightforward. A flat section of 31.9 kilometres changes dramatically when the riders tackle the Mirador de Ézaro in the last 1.8 kilometres. This wall-like climb goes up at 14.6%.

The route is more or less similar to the ITT at the 2017 Worlds in Bergen, Norway. The run-in was more lumpy and the finish climb longer and less steep – 3.4 kilometres at 9.1% – but the essence was the same. Dumoulin took gold ahead of Roglic and Froome.

The Dutchman pulled out off La Vuelta, but the Slovene and the Briton are still on board.

Roglic could strike a massive blow in the GC battle. Last year’s Giro featured a time trial that was flat in the first part and hilly in the second. The Slovene put 1.30 minutes into Carthy and almost 2 minutes into Carapaz. Dan Martin and Enric Mas did not participate in the 2019 Giro d’Italia.
