Tour of the Alps 2020 Route stage 5: Idroland – Riva del Garda

Tour of te Alps 2020 stage 5Friday 25 April - At 120.9 kilometres, stage 5 on the Tour of the Alps is a hilly race with five climbing sections. The finale flies down into Riva del Garda.

Riva del Garda hosted the 17th stage of the Giro d’Italia in 2018. The race led to a sprint finish in Iseo with Elia Vivianni taking the spoils ahead of Sam Bennett.

Unsurprisingly, Riva del Garda lies at Lake Garda and a sprint finish is unlikely on the last day of the Tour of the Alps. The riders click into their pedals just north of another lake, Lake Idro. On flat roads the race goes to Pieve di Bono, where the 4th stage finished. The route climbs to Roncone and descends to Tione in reverse order of stage 4.

The Passo Duron is a 6.4 kilometres climb at 7.9%. Following a downhill to Ponte Arche a 10.1 kilometres climb at 3.6% runs to Ballino. The route goes straight ahead on the SS421 and flies past Lake Tenno for a first passage on the line with 44 kilometres remaining.

Two identical laps conclude the race. The riders go back up the same road that they just descended. The ascent to Lake Tenno is 8.5 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 6.2%. Going back down, back up and back down again, the Tour of the Alps will finish at Via San Francesco in Riva del Garda.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint at kilometre 87 comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
