Race report
After 20 kilometres the breakaway takes shape. Pronskiy, Großschartner, De Marchi, Dan Martin, Gallopin, Roche, Storer, Van Garderen, Pinot and Fabbro attack, while Pernsteiner, Amezqueta and Schultz are the riders to track them down. The chase by Bidard, Steinhaser and Sosa takes little longer, but eventually the group of sixteen puts 3 minutes into the peloton.
Großschartner strikes on the last climb of the day. While the other breakaway riders are reeled in, the Austrian reaches the summit with a lead of 1 minute.
Großschartner wins the stage, while Roche outsprints De Marchi to finish in second.
Yates takes the overall, almost 1 minute ahead of Bilbao. Vlasov rounds out the podium.
