Race report
A breakaway of six riders – Thompson, Janse van Rensburg, Vacek, Bais, Hulgaardt, Engelhardt – opens up a gap of 3 minutes before the peloton takes the reins.
Janse van Rensburg can’t follow the pace in the first ascent of the Piller Sattel, while Thompson is the first rider at the summit. Bais tracks him down in the descent.
The two are reeled in in the second climb of the Piller Sattel. Moments later Quintana strikes. Following several other attacks an elite group remains: Yates, Sivakov, Quintana, and Carthy.
A long pull by Yates and Sivakov is the only rider left in his wheel. But after another acceleration the Briton is alone at the front. He reaches the summit with a lead of 30 seconds.
Yates extends his lead in the descent, while more riders join the chase group in the valley. Following some movement Sivakov, Vlasov, Dan Martin, Hindley and Cepeda are the new chasers. That is, for awhile. Because Sivakov leaves the others behind in the last 5 kilometres.
The chase does not bear fruit, as Yates is too strong. He wins the race with a lead of 41 seconds, while Martin sprints to third place.
