Tour de France 2020 Favourites stage 20: Dennis versus Dumoulin

Rohan dennis - Tour de France 2020 Favourites stage 20: Dennis versus DumoulinThe time trial on the penultimate day of action will bring the ultimate decision in terms of the overall victory. But who'll win the 36 kilometres race with the steep uphill finish on La Planche des Belles Filles?

Rohan Dennis has been imperious in the team trial World Championships of 2019 and 2018, but the Bergen time trial of 2017 saw Tom Dumoulin climbing to victory. That course was 31 kilometres long and slightly undulating until the finish climb appeared. The ascent was not unlike Lan Planche des Belle Filles, only a little shorter and steeper.

The Bergen finish climb was 3.4 kilometres long and the average gradient sat at 9.1%. While La Planche des Belle Filles is 5.9 kilometres long with an average gradient of 8.5%. The steepest ramp, at 20%, appears just before the finish line.

Dumoulin stormed to a commanding victory in Bergen. He won the 2017 World Championships 57 seconds ahead of Roglic with Froome another 24 seconds further behind. Normally, Dennis would have won a medal, but a crash wrecked his chances.

Since then, the Australian won two TT World Titles in a row, although on less demanding courses. Furthermore, Dumoulin could still be in the mix to take yellow into Paris, which would be a perfect motivator to give him wings.
