Tirreno-Adriatico 2023 Route stage 3: Follonica – Foligno
Wednesday 8 March - The 3rd stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico is a 216 kilometres long race from Follonica to Foligno. Hills in the first half, flat roads on the second, so fast men are expected to shine.
The hills in the first half of the race are far from intimidating. The climb to Roccastrade is 5.4 kilometres long and averaging 5%; the Passo del Lume Spento adds 12.6 kilometres at 4.2% to the mix; while the last climb of the day goes up for 3.4 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 5.4%. There are still more than 100 kilometres remaining when the riders reach La Foce.
The Passo del Lume Spento may ring a bell. The climb featured twice in the gravel stage of the 2021 Giro. The first ascent was entirely unpaved and excessively steep, but the Tirreno-Adriatico tackles the Tuscan hill from another side.
After moving past the estate of La Foce, once a hangout for pilgrims along the Via Francigena, an ancient route from Canterbury to Rome, the route levels out and the last 25 kilometres are as flat as can be.
Foligno saw five major stage finishes in the last decade. Three times the Giro d’Italia – wins by Peter Sagan (2021), André Greipel (2016), and Nacer Bouhanni (2014) – and two times the Tirreno-Adriatico – wins by Elia Viviani (2019) and Stephen Cummings (2016). Cummings won with a late attack, the other four were bunch sprints.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
