To begin with, the route of the ultimate stage of the 2017 Giro Rosa takes in nine laps of 11.1 kilometres in Torre del Greco, a coastal town at the base of the volcano. The seventh round features an intermediate sprint with time bonuses of 3, 2 and 1 seconds, which could come in handy when the GC-riders are close on GC.
Finally, with 99.9 kilometres done the last round commences. At 24.1 kilometres, this ultimate lap is longer and it takes in the jaunt up Mount Vesuvius. The climb begins in Ercolano, a resort that is built on the solid lava that destroyed the ancient city of Herculaneum in 79 AD during an eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
The climb amounts to 5.6 kilometres and is averaging 6.4%. Once atop, there are 10.3 kilometres left to race – mostly in descent, while the last kilometre is a false flat.
The first three riders on the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
