foto: Cor VosOn paper, Italy and Switzerland line up with the most potent time trial machines, although the Dutch are also a force to be reckoned with. Title defender Germany seems to be less strong than last year, as Tony Martin is no longer present in the engine room.
Balance, that’s the main thing in the Mixed Relay. Three super fast men don’t make a winning team, and the other way around. It does not pay off if the women win 2 minutes and the men lose 3. Both teams have to be equally strong.
The Suisse are well equiped in that regard, with Küng, Bissegger and Reusser in their ranks. Same story for Italy with Ganna, Affini, Sobrero and Guazzini.
On paper, the men of Italy – Ganna, Affini, Sombrero – look unbeatable, while the same applies for the women of the Dutch squad – Van Dijk, Van Vleuten, Markus. But, as said before, balance, that’s the thing.
