World Cycling Championships 2016 Doha, Qatar: Peter Sagan holds onto rainbow jersey and outsprints Cavendish
The road race for men at the World Cycling Championships in Doha is played out on a flat course of 257 kilometres. Due to crosswinds in the desert the peloton breaks with favourites Kristoff, Cavendish, Sagan, Boonen and Van Avermaet in the first group. Race report
Berhane goes on the attack as soon as the official start is given. Dougall, Corella, Ramírez, Lagkuti, Roth and El Abdia join him. The seven race to a maximum gap of almost 12 minutes.
After reaching the turning point in the route the peloton is torn into pieces due to echelons. Cavendish, Blythe, Matthews, Hayman, Sagan, Kolar, Terpstra, Leezer, Boonen, Van Avermaet, Stuyven, Naesen, Keukeleire, Roelandts, Petit, Bonnet, Bennati, Guarnieri, Nizzolo, Viviani, Boasson Hagen, Korsaeth, Kristoff and Bennett are in the first group and they gobble up the front group.
With a 1 minute lead over a chasing group with Greipel, Kittel, Bouhanni, Degenkolb and Groenewegen the front group hits the 15.2 kilometres circuit in Doha, that’s to be raced seven times. The gap widens to 2 minutes and with three laps remaining Kittel and Degenkolb call it a day when the front group is 3 minutes adrift.
With 2.4 kms left Tom Leezer attacks., yet he is brought back in time to make way for a mighty sprint by defending World Champion Peter Sagan. He bests Mark Cavendish and Tom Boonen
