Race report
It’s a big battle for a spot in the breakaway. Eventually, Oscar Rodriguez, Jacopo Mosca, Enzo Paleni, Georg Steinhauser and Christopher Juul-Jensen break free after 80 kilometres in the saddle. In the descent from the highest point of the day the five race to a lead of 2 minutes.
In the subsequent phase on rolling terrain the leaders widens the gap to 2.40 minutes before it goes down again.
It’s only 1 minute at the base of the last climb and although Steinhauser and Rodriguez reach the summit together, the peloton – or, what’s left of it: around 30 riders – gobbles them up in the first part of the downhill.
The main peloton rejoins the first group in the last 6 kilometres before young Axel Laurance pips Marijn van Berg for the win in the ensuing sprint.
Tadej Pogacar stays in the GC lead.
