Tour of the Alps 2022 Route stage 4: Niederdorf – Kals am Groβglockner
Thursday 21 April - The Tour of the Alps heads into Austria on the fourth day of action. The 142.4 kilometres race finishes in the shadow of the mightly Groβglockner.
The race opens with a false flat downhill of 22 kilometres into Austria. Then the Kartitscher Sattel appears. After the 7.3 kilometres climb at 5.9% the riders descend into the Gailtal.
Following the river Gail downstream, the route descends gradually towards Kötschach to enter the Gailberg Sattel. The ascent is 6.3 kilometres long and averages 4.4%, but that’s merely a statistic. The gradients go all over the place with ramps peaking out at almost 13%, although these stretches are very short.
The riders fly down towards the Drau and follow the river upstream. After two shorts climbs near Lienz the route leaves one valley and enters the next. This one climbs 12.5 kilometres long to the foot of the Groβglockner. The highest mountain in Austria tops out at 3,798 metres, but obviously the race does not go that high.
The ascent to Kals am Groβglockner serves the most trying bit in the first 3 kilometres. This section goes up at 9% and after 4 kilometres on the flat the climbing resumes with 3 kilometres at approximately 6%. The route levels out in the final 2.5 kilometres, which is basically a false flat.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
