The first 100 kilometres are nothing special. On slightly undulating terrain the riders zigzag from east to west and back again, but essentially travelling in southern direction. After 60 kilometres the route is clearly going south.
The Les Mosses climb forms the first real obstacle. It starts to slope in Albeuve and continues to do so in the subsequent 13.4 kilometres. It’s far from the hardest ascent in the world, as the gradients are moderate, averaging 4.1%.
The riders reach the summit with 70 kilometres remaining and descend to Aigle to follow the Rhône valley for tens of kilometres. Just before entering Martigny they circle back to tackle the finish climb. The ascent to ski station Les Marécottes is 7.8 kilometres long and averages 7.3%, while the steepest ramp goes up at 16%.
The first thee riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
