Tour de France 2020 Favourites stage 7: Sprint stage with echelon threat

The 7th stage on the Tour de France is far from flat, but the sprinters should be able to survive the uphills. Yet, the Aveyron and Tarn regions can be windy, so echelons could have an impact on how the race unfolds.

The route winds its way northeast of Toulouse through the rugged interior of France. On narrow country roads the riders head from Millau to Lavaur. The parcours is certainly not pan-flat, but the climbs are relatively easy. The 7th stage should suit the sprinters, although the breakaway will opt for a different scenario.

Two years ago the Tour de France served a race from Millau to Carcassonne. That route was more hilly and the breakaway succeeded. Magnus Cort outgunned Ion Izagirre and Bauke Mollema in a sprint-à-trois.

This year’s Tour de France saw three different types of bunch sprints with three different outcomes. Kristoff won stage 1 in rainy conditions, Ewan turned out on top in a sprint with headwind on day three, while Van Aert took the win in stage 6 at the end of a kilometres long false flat.
