The start is at the famous Copacabana beach. Passing Ipanema and Barra, the riders head in around 40 kilometres for the Grumari Natural Park to the west of the city. The first circuit awaits them four times.
The circuit opens with the Grumari – a 1.2 kilometre climb at 7%. Trees galore on this narrow road and the maximum gain is 13%. Next comes the Grota Funda, a climb of 2.1 kilometres at 4.5% while the steepest sector equals a modest 6%. The Grumari Natural features a cobbled sector of 2 kilometres, which is also to be taken four times.
Heading back to the city a second hilly circuit welcomes the riders. Just before Ipanema, they head inland for the National Park Serra da Tijuca. The two-stage climb up Canoas and Vista Chinesa leads them to an elevation of 715 metres. The top offers fantastic views over all hotspots of Rio, Cristo Redentor amongst them, but all riders eyeing gold will pay no attention at all. Their focus is on the 8.9 kilometres climb with a steepest sector at 18%.
The Serra da Tijuca-circuit is on the menu three times. Each time it is concluded with a technical descent of 6 kilometres.
The Olympic race is concluded with a flat section at 11.3 kilometres, while the golden reward is to be gathered at Copacabana. Just where it all started.
All in all, the road race of the Summer Olympic offers a route to look forward to with eagerness.
