Lotte Kopecky goes solo with 15 kms done and she powers on to a maximum lead at 3 minutes. In the Grumari park Ellen van Dijk, Giorgia Bronzini, Anna Plichta, Trixi Worrack and Kristin Armstrong launch a counter-attack. With 67 kms remaining they catch the leader, yet a moment later the pack re-joins them.
En route to the last circuit a group with Vos, Ferrant-Prévot, Jasinska, Vekemans, Elvin, Cecchini and Worrack go on the attack. When hitting the circuit they enjoy a lead at 40 seconds and almost without delay the front group is reeled in by what’s left of the pack.
After the steepest sections Abbott, Van Vleuten, Longo Borghini and Van der Breggen are left up front. When heading for the Vista Chinesa Van Vleuten goes solo, while Abbott regains contact. Behind them Johansson rejoins the two chasers.
In the drop Van Vleuten leaves Abbott alone, yet she crashes when she is almost down. So now Abbott is the sole leader.
In the last 10 kms the American is reeled in painfully slow until she is brought back in the last few hundred metres. Van der Breggen is the first to jump and she powers to victory.
