Giro 2022: Points Classification

Peter Sagan - Giro 2022: Points Classificationimage: Cor VosWho’ll succeed Peter Sagan as the winner of the points competition of the Giro d’Italia? Last year, the Slovak outgunned Davide Cimolai and Fernando Gaviria to take home the maglia ciclamino.

You can follow the fight for the maglia ciclamino from Friday 6 May, when the first points are awarded in the intermediate sprint in Székesfehérvá.

The points in the Giro’s points competition are awarded at finishes and intermediate sprints. The amount of points varies with the kind of terrain of the particular stage. Most points are given in the flat stages, followed by medium mountain and high mountain stages. The lowest amount of points are awarded in the ITTs, obviously, because these don’t feature intermediate sprints.

The distribution of points is as follows:

Maximum amounts of points at the finish: 50 – 35 – 25 – 18 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Medium amount of points at the finish: 25 – 18 – 12 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Lowest amount of points at the finish: 15 – 12 – 9 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

The amount of points at the intermediate sprint for the maglia ciclamino (first of two sprints) is always the same: 12 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1
