Giro 2015 Route stage 6: Montecatini Terme - Castiglione della Pescaia
Thursday, May 14, 2015 - The 6th stage of the 2015 Giro 2015 leaves from Montecatini Terme to head for the coastal town of Castiglione della Pescaia. Again a Tuscan endeavor and it looks like it’s up the fast men today. Except for a hilly middle-section both the first and the last part of the route are flat.
In recent years Montecatini Terme is a regular in prominent cycling races. Stage 11 of the 2012 Giro saw a finish in the spa town, whilst Montecatini Terme was part of the route of the 2013 World Championships. The arrival in 2012 was marred by a crash in full sprint and Roberto Ferrari took the win. Of course it was Rui Costa winning the rainbow jersey in Florence.
The first 70 kilometres are flat and then comes a section of around 50 kilometres containing some hurdles, bringing riders to an altitude of 624 metres. Still the sprinters don’t have to be too alarmed since the last 60 kilometres are flat again.
Off the coast lies Elba, well known for Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile. In more recent years the island has made a name for itself by producing good wines.
