Marco Bandiera and Andrea Fedi formed today’s breakaway. This duo were also in the break on the stage to Montecassino. Their gain grew quickly and after 13 kilometres the gap was 8’35”. The pack eventually woke up and after 50 kilometres of racing the peloton had taken it back to 6’00”. The sprinters teams were happy to manage the gap and with a 2 man break, there was never any doubt they’d be brought back.
With 36 kilometres left to race, the gap hit 2’49” with the peloton content to let them dangle a little longer until the serious business began.
On the closing climbs the escapees were reeled and Sky did their best to rid the field of sprinters. They didn’t succeed however and Mezgec, Nizzolo, Bouhanni et al were still aboard. FDJ moved to front in the final kilometre and Bouhanni took his 3rd stage win.
