Vuelta 2020 Favourites stage 7: Breakaway day

La Vuelta's 7th stage traverses the hilly region between Vitoria-Gasteiz and Villanueva de Valdegovía. Featuring a tough climb with 19 kilometres out and a flat finale, the course is tailored for a successful breakaway.

While the route is lumpy for most of the race there is one climb that stands out. The Puerto Orduña is a 7.8 kilometres climb at 7.7%, and it’s tackled twice. The riders crest the pass for the first time at kilometre 76.3 and the same peak returns, after an ascent on the same side, with 19.1 kilometres remaining.

The route is not challenging enough for GC riders to open up time gaps, so chances are that the breakaway will last until the end. A huge battle to be part of it is to be expected.

The second ascent of the Orduña continues with a 5 kilometres descent into the valley before a false flat could shake up things. Another, shorter, descent leads onto the flat finale.
