Race report
Shortly after the start Alexis Gougeard, KOM leader Davide Villella, Thomas De Gendt and Arnaud Courteille get clear, while Alessandro De Marchi chases them down. The five race to a lead of 5 minutes on the summit of the only ranked climb of the day, Alto de Ardales. Villella takes most KOM points ahead of De Gendt before the Italian stops his efforts to wait for the peloton.

De Marchi and De Gendt leave the other two behind with 25 kms remaining, while the Italian heads out on his own at km 15 before the line before he is caught with 7 kms left.

In the ensuing sprint Trentin outguns his opponents to take his third win this Vuelta. In the demanding finale De la Cruz ends up behind a split in the peloton and swaps places with Kelderman, who now sits in fourth. Froome, Nibali and Chaves are still the best three riders in La Vuelta.
