A fast time-trial is expected. The 20.3 kilometre route is totally flat running along straight roads on the banks of Folsom Lake.
Last year’s time trial was held in San Jose. The GC winner Tejay van Garderen (image) captured the stage with a 0’22” victory over Lieuwe Westra. He laid the foundation for his overall win by taking 1’05” from runner up Michael Rogers.
Folsom was originally called Granite City. It was occupied by gold miners who were ‘rushing for fortune’ in the Sierra Nevada. The founder of the city was Joseph Libbey Folsom and after he died in 1855 the city was renamed in his honor. The town is best known internationally for it’s prison, made famous through the words of Johnny Cash.
In the 2011 Tour, the bunch passed through Folsom in a stage won by Greg Henderson.
The first rider starts at 22.05 CET and the arrival of the last one is expected around 00:20.
