A breakaway of 7 gained a maximum lead of 6 minutes but the last of them was caught on the lower slopes of Mount Diablo with 5 kilometres remaining.
The impressive young Aussie Rohan Dennis managed to jump away in final section, winning the stage and putting 20 seconds into GC leader Wiggins at the same time. The 23 year old is now just 24 seconds off the race lead.
