Race report
Attacks. Attacks. And more attacks. But the peloton is still together on the the first climb, Côte d’Esmoulières. Then Rachel Neylan jumps clear. Demi Vollering brings her back to extend her QOM lead. The other GC riders are right on her wheel.
Leah Thomas strikes after the QOM sprint and Paulina Rooijakkers, Mavi García, Elise Chabbey, Riejanne Markus, Paula Patiño, Grace Brown, Liane Lippert, Yara Kastelijn and Coralie Demay go with her.
Yellow jersey Annemiek van Vleuten is forced to change bikes due to a mechanical with 55 kilometres to go, which inspires SD Worx and Trek to up the pace in the GC group. Van Vleuten makes it back on the Balcon d’Alsace, while Krista Doebel-Hickok bridges across to the lead group.
Rooijakkers strikes early on the finish climb before García overhauls her. Van Vleuten attacks on the lower slopes and gobbles up García with 5.4 kilometres to go. She forges on to win the stage 30 seconds ahead of Vollering with Persico, Niewiadoma and Labous more than 1 minute further in arrears.
Van Vleuten takes the first Tour de France Femmes ahead of Vollering and Niewiadoma, while the Dutch do a clean sweep in terms of jerseys – Van Vleuten yellow, Vos green, Vollering polka dots, Van Anrooij best young rider.
