The riders clip into their pedals in Meaux, just east of Paris. Altough the route climbs from the start this is hardly a harbinger for what’s in store. Effectualy, the toughest test of the day is the Côte de Tigeaux, a hill of 1.5 kilometres at 4.7% that peaks out after 15.9 kilometres of racing.
The route takes the riders in southeasterly direction. The riders cross the line for the first time after 115.7 kilometres before a local lap rounds out the route.
Provins is a very well preserved medieval town. Located on the crossroads of the European trade roads, the town once held prestigious trading fairs which were known as Foires de Champagne. The oldest restaurant in France is still to be found in Provins. The Hostellerie de la Croix d’Or was created in 1270 as an inn.
