The riders leave Sélestat to traverse the plain of Alsace for 35 kilometres. Shortly after moving through Munster the Petit Ballon looms. The 9.3 kilometres climb at 8.1% is followed by a descent.
Back in the valley there is no time to dilly dally, as the riders enter the 7.1 kilometres long Col du Platzerwasel. The average gradient sits at 8.3%, while the route continues to climb at shallow gradients after the Platzerwasel.
Shortly after the first passage on the line a long descent takes the riders to Oderen and some 10 kilometres later the decisive Grand Ballon climb appears. The ascent is 13.5 kilometres long and averages 6.7%.
The route does not descend after the final climb, but continues just below the ridge for 7 kilometres to Le Markstein.
