The route travels from one commercial centre in the Champagne region to the next. Reims and Épernay are havens for Champagne lovers.
In a rolling opener the first hill appears after 20 kilometres. The Côte de Trépail is 1 kilometre long and rises at 5%. The route continues on slightly undulating terrain untill it evens out at kilometre 40.
The hills reappear with the Côte de Vertus (700 metres at 7%) and the Côte de Mesnil-sur-Oger (1.7 kilometres at 6.7%) before the action should intensify in a final lap around Épernay.
The riders cross the line for the first time with 24.1 kilometres remaining. They head for the short and sharp Côte de Mutigny: 900 metres at 12.2%. Still 15.6 kilometres to go at the top and on rolling roads it goes on to the Côte du Mont Bernon: 1 kilometre at 4.6%.
The Mont Bernon is crested 3.7 kilometres before the line, while the last 500 metres are also uphill – to be precise, at 8%.
