Tour de France 2021 Favourites stage 6: Back to the fast men

Mark Cavendish - Tour de France 2021 Favourites stage 6: Back to the fast menfoto: Cor VosThe course of La Grande Boucle's 6th stage should fancy fast finishers. The route is almost entirely played out on the flat. (Slideshow route/profile)

The route of stage 6 has got sprinters written all over it. The finish in Châteauroux lies midway between Bordeaux and Paris, which was the case three times before in the history of the Tour de France. In 2008 and 2011 Mark Cavendish stormed to victory, while Mario Cipollini took the spoils in 1998.

Looking at last year’s Grand Tours, we saw Sam Bennett and Caleb Ewan both win two sprints at Le Tour, while Arnaud Démare was – by far – the fastest finisher at the Giro (four wins) and Pascal Ackermann at La Vuelta (two wins). Ackermann and Bennett do not participate in France, while Bennett is crashed out on stage 3.

Merlier and Cavendish are the only sprinter who took a win in this edition.

Cav won the finish in Fougéres, which he did before in 2015. Is he going to serve another trip down memory lane?
