Tour de France 2021 Favourites stage 5: ITT specialists on rolling route

Wout van Aert - Tour de France 2021 Favourites stage 5: ITT specialists on rolling routefoto: Cor VosThe 5th stage of the Tour de France is an individual time trial of 27 kilometres. The slightly undulating route features an elevation gain of 200 metres. (Slideshow route/profile)

The flat to undulating course to Laval suits pure specialistst. This year, Wout van Aert took the San Benedetto del Tronto ITT on the Tirreno-Adriatico, Stefan Küng took the Tour de Suisse time trial, while Stefan Bissegger powered to triumph in Paris-Nice’s chrono race.

In addition to the battle for the stage honours, the ITT will also be the first crucial outing for the GC contenders. The likes of Geraint Thomas, Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar should be able to put time into their rivals. That is, not condisering the damage that has been done by the crashes on stage 3.
