Upon leaving Castelnuovo Val di Cecina the pack races om rolling roads before a long drop kicks in. After around 50 kilometres a flat section leads to the foot of the regular climb up to Scansano. Located at an elevation of 500 metres, the picturesque medieval town is the highest point of the day.
The next climb is shorter. On the SP 159 the riders climb to Montemerano and just before reaching Manciano the road goes down again. Leading towards the Tyrrhenian coast, the last 40 kilometres or so are mostly in descent.
After a short section at 7% in the last kilometre, the arrival in Montalto di Castro is slightly uphill, offering chances for the likes of Peter Sagan.
