Race report
Rebecca Koerner is the first rider to attack. Emily Newsom joins her at the front of the race. The two work well together and extend their lead to 3 minutes before Newsom goes too fast and continues solo. Newsom is caught with 55 kilometres to go.
Jeanne Korevaar is the next attacker. Grace Brown and Mavi Garcia join her, but the three are brought back.
Chantal van den Broek-Blaak jumps clear inside the last 30 kilometres. Marta Bastianelli and Alena Amialiusik counter. And again, to no avail, although the first group has been decimated to some 15 riders by now.
Lotte Kopecky jumps clear with 22 kilometres remaining. Marianne Vos, Annemiek van Vleuten, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig and Kasia Niewiadoma catch her on the penultimate sterrato. Shirin van Anrooij and Demi Vollering bridge across later, followed by the rest.
Van Vleuten sets the pace on the El Tolfe sector with only Kopecky remaining in her wheel. The two are caught inside the last 8 kilometres by Moolman-Pasio, Longo Borghini, Niewiadoma, and Uttrup Ludwig. Vos and Vollering rejoins them moments later, again followed by the rest.
Van Vleuten sets the pace on the steep climb into Siena. She drops her rivals one after the other. Except Kopecky. The Belgian champion digs deep and retains contact. She overhauls Van Vleuten when the gradients level out to outgun the double winner on the Piazza del Campo in Siena.
