Giro 2023 Route stage 5: Atripalda - Salerno
Wednesday 10 May - Stage 5 on the Giro d'Italia sets off from Atripalda to finish in Salerno. The race is 172 kilometres long and takes in an elevation gain of 2,400 metres.
The route almost climbs from the start. The Passo Serra – 3.9 kilometres at 7.4% – is crested at kilometre 11.6. That sets the tone. The first half of the race goes up and down – mostly up – until the highest point is reached at the Guardia dei Lombardi. This is a 8.4 kilometres climb at 3%, while the summit peaks out at 972 metres above sea level. And 100 kilometres from the finish line.
The route descends with some false flat interuptions to Oliveto Citra, where the steepest climb of the day appears: 2.6 kilometres at 8%. A short descent precedes the last uphill of the day. It’s a moderate one: 3.4 kilometres at 3.5%.
There are still 50 kilometres remaining in Oliveto Citra. High speeds are to be expected, as the riders fly down to the Mediterranean Sea before continuing along the flat coast line into Salerno.
Salerno hosted ten stage finishes on the Giro, although it has been a while. In 1995 Rolf Sørensen took the spoils in the town at the beginning of the stunning Amalfi coast.
The second intermediate sprint comes with time bonuses of 3, 2 and 1 seconds, while 10, 6 and 4 seconds are awarded to the first three riders on the line.

Any idea what time this stage might finish? I’m looking at a flight that arrives in Naples at 1.45pm and grabbing a hire car to get to the finish. I suspect that the timing is too tight (theoretically a 48 minute drive from the airport to Salerno) but if I knew that the finish would be scheduled for 5pm I might give it a try. Thanks!
Just added the times. Fastest finish is expected at 17:00 CEST, slowest 17:30.
