Giro d'Italia 2023Wednesday 10 May - Stage 5 on the Giro d'Italia sets off from Atripalda to finish in Salerno. The race is 172 kilometres long and takes in an elevation gain of 2,400 metres.

The route almost climbs from the start. Folliwng a flat run-in of 7 kilometres the riders enters the Passo Serra climb – 6.2 kilometres long and averaging 4.8%. That sets the tone. The first half of the race goes up and down until the highest point is reached at the Guardia dei Lombardi. This is a 8.4 kilometres climb at 3%, while the summit peaks out at 977 metres above sea level. Still 100 kilometres to go at the summit.

The route descends with some false flat interuptions to Oliveto Citra, where the steepest climb of the day appears: 2.6 kilometres at 8%. The last 50 kilometres go either downhill towards the Mediterranean Sea or along the flat coast line to a likely sprint finish in Salerno.

Salerno hosted ten stage finishes on the Giro, although it has been a while. In 1995 Rolf Sørensen took the spoils in the town at the beginning of the stunning Amalfi coast.
