The only flat kilometres are the first 40. This section leads along the Golfo di Policastro and once the route turns inland the road goes either up or down for the rest of the day.
In order of appearance the riders tackle the Passo Colla (9.3 kilometres at 4.5%), Monte Sirino (24.4 kilometres at 3.8%), Montagna Grande di Viggiano (6.6 kilometres at 9.1%), Monte Scuro (6.1 kilometres at 9.7%) and La Sellata (7.8 kilometres at 5.9%) before reaching arrival place Potenza.
Still two minor yet decisive challenges to go. In Potenza the riders crest a 2.3 kilometer climb at 4.9% with 7 kilometres remaining before the last 350 metres go up at 8%.
