Race report
After 30 kilometres of racing a huge breakaway takes shape. Jan Tratnik, Elia Viviani, Kamil Malecki, Davide Ballerini, Mikkel Honoré, Tanel Kangert, Arnaud Démare, Davide Cimolai, Matthew Holmes, Davide Villella, Nicola Conci, Brandon McNulty, Andrea Vendrame, Filippo Fiorelli, Pieter Serry, Einer Rubio, Amanuel Gebreighzabier, Matteo Sobrero, Geoffrey Bouchard, Simon Guglielmi and Julien Bernard open up a gap of 7 minutes.
The attackers move through Sestriere for trhe first time before Ballerini attacks in the descent. In the second climb Rubio overhauls him.
Meanwhile, Dennis sets the pace in the GC group and maglia rosa Kelderman loses contact with 30 kilometres to go. Only the Australian, Geoghegan Hart and Hindley left in the front. They reach the Sestriere 1.30 minutes behind Rubio with the maglia rosa 37 second further back.
Serry and Ballerini rejoin Rubio just before the finish climb, while Dennis, Geoghegan Hart and Hindley bridge across a little later. They put almost 2 minutes into the group Kelderman.
Hindley pockets 3 bonus seconds in an intermediate sprint, Geoghegan Hart takes 2, before the Australian accelerates inside the last 2.5 kilometres. He keeps on pushing, but Geoghegan Hart follows like a shadow.
The race comes down to a two-up sprint and Geoghegan Hart takes the win. By merit of a tie-breaker, Hindley moves into the maglia rosa, while his team mate Kelderman drops to third place.
